Bicycles, Parts, and Frames
Circumstances are such that I don't have as much time for the page as I would like. Please be informed that at any given moment I will have a dozen or more bikes that are not listed. I am in the process of simplifying and streamlining in order to conserve storage space and make browsing easier. Note that bikes that have been SOLD are marked such and the photo are minimized (small).
Trek 420-Friendly Sport-Tour
In a relatively short lifespan Trek has had a great share of successful, if not legendary, models among them the 520 Touring, the 7-- hybrid series (more successful than legendary), the US Postal (somewhat tarnished by the downfall of Lance), and more recently the Madone.
Nevertheless, classic Trek had many great models notably the 600 sport series and the 700 race series. Lost among these is the 400 sport tour series which in many ways are the most practical road bikes Trek ever made.
The 420 is of particular interest not only for the temporal association of the model number but as a lighter, more nimble-but still sturdy cousin to the hefty 520 touring bike. Interestingly, the 420 is perhaps the only Trek model to come out in both steel and aluminum. Both are suitable for long distance touring, a friend went cross country on a aluminum model.
The one pictured here is Tru-Temper steel, has a triple chain ring and a Blaze grouppo. The Blaze was a collective response to Shimano's market dominance where several companies co-branded their parts into a group.
Bike is large, about 60cm and is in great tune.

1992 Bridgestone CB-1, City Bike
Bridgestone CB-1, a smartly designed city bike |
It is perhaps testimony to the power of the internet (as if anyone needed proof) and to the authority of the late and very great Sheldon Brown that with one sentence: "There was nothing wrong with them, but nothing special, either." The Bridgestone CB–City Bike–series has been condemmed as somehow mediocre.
During the height of the mountain bike craze, companies started to realize that many if not most of these "mountain" bikes were never seeing dirt and were in fact being used on pavement (SUV and Pickup truck owners can relate). So companies decided to put out a few "city bikes" which were usually little more than a lowish end mountain bike with different paint, decals, and slick tires.
This is a pity. The reason mountain bike became popular for urban use is that they make great sense. The stout frame and ample braze-ons for rack and fenders make the bike ideal for hauling stuff and foul weather. But the real advantage is the smaller 26" wheels. Smaller wheels are stronger (because of shorter spokes, wider tires, and stronger rims), yet the speed penalty is not as bad as you might expect because mountain wheels can cruise over rough roads, accelerate faster, and because bike tires have a round profile (as opposed to a car tire which is flat and wide).
So, about the CB-1. The mid-'80s mountain bikes were essentially touring bikes (touring frames, triple touring cranks, touring cantilever brakes) with BMX handlebars, and smaller wheels from the old Schwinn Excelsiors. Bridgestone revolutionized the frame design to make them more suitable for climbing and more maneuverable. The XO series was a hybrid made with road tubing– essentially a sporty touring bike with wider tire capacity and more upright handlebars. So, about the CB-1 (this time for real). The CB-1 is essentially a throwback to the older mountain bikes. (To this day Bridgestone's Grant Petersen rates the the mid-'80s mountain bike as his ideal urban commuter bike.)
In an interview I asked Grant Petersen of Rivendell/Bridgestone:
What is your all time favorite city bike?
". . . if you’re asking my own preference, or what I think makes the most functional sense, the most practical sense, I’ll stick out my neck and nominate an all-steel early to late ’80s mountain bike fitted up with a higher and maybe a swept-back handlebar, fenders, rack, and basket. Platform pedals, kickstand, bell, rear view mirror, and some kind of light."
Apart from the 26" wheels (with stainless spokes and a somewhat theft-deterrent non-quick release nut) the CB-1 has up-right bars (helpful to see over traffic) and a full CrMo frame & fork (which was pretty uncommon on '80s road bikes.)
This one is pretty medium in size. I'll probably change the seat and post from what is pictured. $175

Vintage Trek
Early Trek (possibly 1980) made of Ishiwata 022 tubing, small 53cm frame. Mix of Suntour and newer components, new tires. $250 SOLD
In the early '80s, while the European companies were putting out consumer-level klunkers and the Japanese had not quite figured out the American consumer market, a small company in Waterloo Wisconsin was producing some of the finest steel road and sport tour bikes ever built. That company was Trek, who has since grown to a dominance in the bicycle market.
There is not one bicycle that can be wholly accountable for Trek's success, and a lot of the credit should go to the Lance Armstrong Tour bikes, many great mountain bikes, and even the very popular hybrids beginning with the 700 series of the '90s. But none of this would not have happened had not Trek produced superior road bikes in the early '80s. What makes these bikes special? Treks were built of superior steel like Reynolds 531, Ishiwata 022, and Colombus but so were other bikes at the time. Treks were one of the few bikes to be constructed with silver solder. Silver solder is more expensive and more difficult to work with; but it allows the builder to heat the tube less, thus preserving more strength in the tubing, which allows the frame to be built of thinner, stronger, lighter steel tubes.
